How to Play Slapjack

These tabletop rules use Jack-only slaps. The computer game follows the same flip-and-slap pattern, with the online house rules listed below.

1. Deal: Remove the Jokers, shuffle, and deal the whole deck face down as evenly as possible. With two players, each gets 26 cards. With three, the stacks contain 18, 17, and 17 cards; with four, 13 each. Keep your stack face down without looking through it.
2. Take turns: Start to the dealer's left and move clockwise. Turn your top card outward into the shared center pile so everyone sees it together. Non-Jacks stay in the pile.
3. Slap a Jack: Any player may slap, whoever flipped it. The first hand touching the Jack wins every card in the center, not just the Jack. Put the collected cards face down beneath your stack. Continue with the player to the winner's left.
4. Handle a false slap: If you slap a non-Jack, give your top card face down to the player who revealed that card. The center pile stays where it is. Agree before starting how to handle slapping your own non-Jack.
5. Finish: Collect all the cards to win. Under a common tabletop rule, an empty-handed player skips flips but may try for the next Jack. Win that pile to re-enter; miss it and you are out. The online version here instead ends immediately when a deck runs out.

For a close slap, the hand directly touching the Jack wins, not a hand on top of another player's hand. Families also differ on shuffling captured cards. Choose the convention before the first deal. References: Pagat's Slapjack rules and Bicycle's Slapjack rules.

A Slapjack Round, Step by Step

Imagine an empty center pile and two players, Alex and Sam. Here is how three flips can change the game.

What if Alex slapped the Queen instead? Alex would give one card to Sam, who played the Queen. The 7 and Queen would remain in the center for a later Jack. A large pile does not make a non-Jack a valid slap.

Slapjack Tips

You cannot choose the order of a face-down deck. Your useful decisions are where to look and when to react. Accurate recognition matters more than tapping every face card as quickly as possible.

• Watch the rank in the corner of the top card. Kings and Queens have illustrated faces too, but their K and Q are your signal to wait.
• Stay ready during the other player's turn. Their Jack is just as valuable as one you reveal yourself.
• Keep your hand, pointer, or tapping finger close enough to react without covering the card.
• Use the same deliberate rhythm when the pile grows. A larger reward is no reason to slap before you have actually seen a Jack.

Slapjack Variations and Similar Games

Classic Slapjack uses Jacks as the only slap trigger. Doubles and sandwiches are optional house rules; they are not active in the game above. Related games change the trigger or add extra turn rules.

Slapjack House Rules Used Here

This is a short, two-player version against the computer. The table below describes the actual browser game, including its immediate-finish rule rather than the tabletop re-entry option.

Jack appears	Click the center pile before the computer timer finishes.
False slap	Your top card goes to the player who revealed the non-Jack. If you revealed it yourself, that card moves to the bottom of your own deck.
Collecting a pile	The captured cards are shuffled and added beneath the winner's deck. The other player flips next.
No cards left	The player with cards remaining takes any center pile and the game ends, even if the last card flipped was a Jack. There is no extra re-entry slap.
Winning	Collect all 52 cards.

Does the suit of a Jack matter in Slapjack?

No. All four Jacks can win the pile. Hearts, diamonds, clubs, and spades have the same role; watch the rank rather than the color.

Are Slapjack and Slap Jack the same card game?

Yes. Slapjack and Slap Jack usually refer to the same reaction card game where players slap the pile when a Jack appears.

Do you need to keep score?

No points sheet is needed: your cards are your progress. If you want a timed tabletop game instead, agree on an end time before dealing and count cards then. That is a house rule, not a timer on each turn.

Is Slapjack mostly luck or skill?

The card order is luck, but the Jack slap is reaction skill. The better you react, the more piles you win.

Can you look at your cards before flipping?

No. Keep the stack face down and reveal only its top card on your turn. Peeking or rearranging cards removes the shared surprise that makes the slap a fair race.

Can I play Slapjack on my phone?

Yes. Tap your deck to flip cards and tap the center pile to slap Jacks on mobile or tablet.
